Bass clef notes
The bass clef (𝄢, the F clef) is the bottom staff in piano music — the left hand — and the home staff for cello, bass, bassoon, trombone and tuba. Every note on it, labeled.

Lines and spaces
| Bottom → top | Mnemonic | |
|---|---|---|
| Lines | G B D F A | Good Boys Do Fine Always |
| Spaces | A C E G | All Cows Eat Grass |
The two dots of the clef sit either side of the fourth line from the bottom — that line is F, hence "F clef".
Ledger lines
Above the staff: B just over the top line, then middle C on the first ledger line, then D, E. Below the staff: F just under the bottom line, then E on the first ledger line, D, C.
Coming from treble clef?
Every position on the bass staff is two letters lower than the same position on the treble staff. Treble top line F → bass top line A; treble bottom line E → bass bottom line G. If you already read treble, use this until the bass names stick on their own.
Octave numbers on the bass staff
The bass staff sits below middle C (C4). Its top line is A3, its middle line D3, its bottom line G2, and the first ledger line above it is middle C itself — the same note as the first ledger line below the treble staff, which is how the two staves join up in piano music. When a chord symbol says 'C' the left hand usually plays a C in this range: C3, the second space from the bottom, or the C2 two ledger lines below the staff for a deeper sound. The blue letters on every song page on this site are bass-clef notes in exactly this range.
A five-minute practice drill
- Cover the letters on the chart above and name the lines bottom to top (G B D F A), then the spaces (A C E G). Check, and repeat until it is automatic.
- Open any song page — Mary Had a Little Lamb has one simple chord per bar — cover the blue letters and name the three notes of each chord from the bottom up.
- Play the chord as you name it. The left hand learns the bass clef fastest by playing whole chords, because you feel the shape (root, third, fifth) rather than reading three separate notes.
Common mistakes
- Reading it as treble. The most common error by far: the middle line is D here, not B. If a passage sounds wrong by a third, this is why.
- Losing count on ledger lines. Below the staff, the first ledger line is E2, the next C2. Count down from the bottom line G2: F2 in the space under it, then E2 on the line.
- Ignoring the key signature. Sharps and flats after the bass clef apply to the left hand just as they do to the right — a B♭ key signature makes every B in the chord a black key.
