Für Elise — piano notes with letters

The famous opening eight bars, in A minor. Where Beethoven wrote a rest after the first note of a bar, this beginner arrangement holds the note instead, so the letters and the MIDI line up beat for beat.

About the song

Beethoven wrote this bagatelle in A minor around 1810, and it was only published in 1867, forty years after his death, by the scholar Ludwig Nohl, who claimed the manuscript was dedicated 'Für Elise'. Who Elise was is still argued about — the strongest candidate is Therese Malfatti, whom Beethoven proposed to. The opening E–D♯ trill figure is one of the most recognizable phrases in piano music.

How to play it, phrase by phrase

The whole opening is built on the E–D♯ rocking figure. Bars 1–2: E D♯ E D♯ E B D C, then the left hand answers. Bar 3 is A C E A (an A minor arpeggio), bar 4 is B E G♯ B (E major, with the black-key G♯), bar 5 climbs C E E D♯ and the trill returns in bar 6. Bars 7–8 repeat bars 3–4 with a different ending (B E C B) and the piece lands on A. Play the E–D♯ pairs lightly and evenly — they should sound like a shimmer, not a hammer. Where Beethoven wrote a rest at the start of a bar, this beginner version holds the note so the letters line up with the beat.
