About the song

The tune was known in England in the 1750s and was first sung by British soldiers to mock the colonial troops during the French and Indian War; the Americans adopted it as their own and played it at the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781. The “macaroni” of the lyric was a slang word for a fashionable young man. It is the state song of Connecticut and one of the first tunes American children learn.

How to play it, phrase by phrase

“Yankee Doodle went to town” is C C D E, C E D. “Riding on a pony” is C C D E, C B. “He stuck a feather in his cap” is G C C D E, F E D. “And called it macaroni” is C B G A, B C C. The chorus drops to A: “Yankee Doodle keep it up” is A B A G, A B C; “Yankee Doodle dandy” is G A G F, E G. “Mind the music and the step” repeats the A B A G phrase, and “with the girls be handy” is A G C B, D C C. Two beats a bar, brisk and cheerful.
