About the song

The tune is the French song 'Ah! vous dirai-je, maman', printed in 1761; Mozart wrote twelve variations on it (K. 265) around 1781. The words are Jane Taylor's poem 'The Star' from 1806. The same melody carries the alphabet song and 'Baa, Baa, Black Sheep', which is why it is usually the first thing a child learns on any instrument.

How to play it, phrase by phrase

Bars 1–4: C C G G, A A G, F F E E, D D C — the first line, and also the last (bars 9–12). Bars 5–8 are the middle, 'up above the world so high': G G F F, E E D, sung twice. There are only six different notes, all white keys, and the right hand never needs to move its position. Play each pair of repeated notes with a small bounce and make the last note of every line ('star', 'are', 'high', 'sky') a little longer.

Letter notes, bar by bar (right hand)
