About the song

The rhyme about the bridge that keeps falling down was printed in London in 1744 and is probably much older; the tune we sing was published in the 1870s. The bridge itself was rebuilt many times between the Roman period and the 1970s, when the 1831 stone bridge was sold to an American developer and re-erected in Arizona. The song is in nearly every beginner piano book because it needs only five notes.

How to play it, phrase by phrase

“London Bridge is falling down” is G A G F, E F G — a long G, a short A, then down and back. “Falling down, falling down” is D E F, then E F G. The first line repeats. “My fair lady” is four slow notes: D, G, E and C. Play with the right thumb on C and one finger per note; the hand never moves. Left hand: C chords, with a G chord under each “falling down”.
