About the song

Mendelssohn wrote the Wedding March in 1842 as part of his incidental music for Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, seventeen years after his famous overture to the same play. It became the standard recessional at weddings after Queen Victoria's daughter chose it for her marriage to the Crown Prince of Prussia in 1858. The original is for full orchestra with trumpet fanfares in C major; this page gives its main tune.

How to play it, phrase by phrase

Bar 1 is C, C C, and a long E; bar 2 is E, E E, and a long G; bar 3 is G, G G, and a long B — three steps up the chord with the same rhythm each time. Bar 4 leaps to E, then A G F down to D. Bars 5 to 7 repeat bars 1 to 3, and bar 8 lands on a whole-note high C. Play it strongly with a firm left hand: C chords under the C and E bars, G chords under the G and B bars.

Letter notes, bar by bar (right hand)

Read left to right; a | is a bar line. Chord symbols are for the left hand or a guitar.
