The sunrise music from Peer Gynt, written by Grieg in 1875 for Ibsen's play — where, despite its Norwegian sound, it accompanies a dawn in the Moroccan desert. Grieg later extracted it as the first movement of his Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, and it has been used for every kind of sunrise since. The theme is pentatonic (five notes only) and passes between flute and oboe in the original; the key there is E major.
How to play it, phrase by phrase
The motif is G E D C D E: down the scale from G to C and back up two notes. Bars 1 and 2 play it twice. Bar 3 lifts the answer: G E G A E A. Bar 4 returns to the motif, bar 5 repeats it, and bars 6 and 7 give the lifted answer twice. Bar 8 starts the motif once more and settles on a long C. Play it as slowly as you can bear, with the left-hand chords (C and F) sounding for the whole bar, and a small swell each time the line rises to A.
Letter notes, bar by bar (right hand)
Read left to right; a | is a bar line. Chord symbols are for the left hand or a guitar.

Three things to watch
- The five notes C, D, E, G, A are the whole piece: it is a pentatonic tune, the same scale as the black keys.
- 6/8 time, slow: each bar is two gentle beats of three notes.
- Bars 3, 6 and 7 are the answering shape that lifts to A — let it swell a little and then settle back.
